
Mount Whaleback SK1 & SK2 Machine Demolition
Scope of Work
The scope of works was to demolish and deconstruct two redundant stackers and associated plant located at BHPBIO Mt. Whaleback iron ore mine in Newman, WA. The first stacker was demolished with a controlled felling, and the second by deconstruction directly over an operating conveyor. All works were completed while working within close proximity of live plant and services which required precise planning and scheduling:
- Removal of 800T of demolished steel
- Removal of Stacker 1 by a controlled felling, 140T
- Removal of Stacker 2 by reverse construction, 450T
- Retrieval and salvage of Stacker 2 slew bearing
- Safe removal of contaminated and toxic materials, such as hydrocarbons, asbestos, and lead biased paints
- Completion of Structural Engineering Reports and FEA for the demolition
- Project completed with nil recordable injuries, nil HSE incidents and two weeks ahead of schedule
